An ethnic clash erupted on 3 May 2023 in India’s north-eastern state of Manipur between the Meitei people, a majority that lives in the Imphal Valley, and the tribal community from the surrounding hills, including the Kuki and Zo peoples. More than 100 people have lost their lives in these clashes.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS) has issued a statement on June 18, 2023 in this regard. The statement was issued by the RSS’ Sarkaryavah( General Secretary) Dattatreya Hosabale. Here is the full text of the statement:

“The spate of violence that has gripped Manipur over the past 45 days is extremely worrisome. The violence and uncertainty that engulfed Manipur after a protest rally organized in Churachandpur on May 03, 2023 at the time of Lai Haraoba festival deserves to be condemned. It is extremely unfortunate that the violence between those who have lived a peaceful life with mutual harmony and co-operation for centuries has not stopped yet.

In this period of terrible grief, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) stands in solidarity with the more than 50,000 displaced and other victims of the ongoing Manipur crisis. The RSS is of the considered opinion that there is no place for violence and hatred in a democratic set-up. It also firmly believes that the solution to any problem is possible only through mutual dialogue and expression of brotherhood in a peaceful atmosphere.

The RSS appeals to everyone to overcome the trust deficit that has precipitated the current crisis. It requires comprehensive efforts from both the communities. It can be resolved by addressing the sense of insecurity and helplessness among the Meiteis, as well as genuine concerns of the Kuki community simultaneously.

The Sangh appeals to the government, including the local administration, police, military and the central agencies, to take every possible step to immediately stop this painful spate of violence, ensure a seamless supply of relief materials among the displaced, along with necessary actions to maintain peace and harmony.

The RSS also appeals to the civil society, political groups and the common people of Manipur to take every possible step to put an end to the chaos and cycle of violence prevailing in the state, and work to secure human life and lasting peace.
