How Indian media reported on RSS leader’s recall of Emergency

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS) led from the front in the movement to restore democracy. According to various media reports,  more than hundred thousand volunteers of the RSS were put in jail including its top leadership. Period of Emergency was like second freedom struggle: RSS leader Dattatreya Hosabale

RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale on Sunday said that he concurs with people describing the struggle during the emergency as the second freedom struggle for the country.

On June 25, 1975, the Indira Gandhi led Congress government imposed emergency, which lasted for the next 21 months during which fundamental rights of the people were provisionally suspended and curbs were put on the press.

An emotional Hosabale said that “oppressing and banning the RSS was a real priority for the then government. “Many of time it feels- why remember that cruelty? Sangh’s third Sarsanghchalak, Balasaheb Devras had made an important statement after the emergency. In his public address, he said,” forgive and forget”. But the acute atrocity that occurred during the black chapter of the country’s history, is recorded in pages of history,” Hosabale said.
